I give 2 stars only because the kind elderly man from my first ever experience. I wish he was there instead so I would never have had to meet that other man.
Have made several buys over time, but recently they handled a furniture donation on short notice. Better for the local community than the corporate thrift stores. Kudos for them!
My first experience was 3 years ago. I was given a voucher through the YWCA to furnish my apartment. The man I dealt with was elderly and very kind, even having an employee give me a lift home. I had nothing but great things to say about them and recommended them to everyone I knew.
They have a good price on some nice monitors.
Love this place! You can go there just to look around and I promise you'll leave with something you didn't know you needed.
After my second and most recent visit to them, I'm not sure if I'll ever be back or ever recommend people to go to them again. It was a different man I dealt with this time. I was needing a futon and found an excellent gently used one that I was ready to purchase right then and there. I went up and rang the bell, and was met with a taller man (in his 40s?). I told him I found a futon and would like to purchase it, I just needed the price on it. My first impression of him was he seemed stressed out and just wanted to get home (as it was a Friday and near closing hours), so he did come off rude, but I brushed it off. I was to follow him back to the area that held the futons, but he had no consideration of me being 8 months pregnant and he practically power walked all the way back there. When I finally reached him, he was standing there next to the futons. Everything about him from his facial expression and body language was of blatant irritation that it took me so long to walk to him. At that point I felt very uncomfortable with hurt feelings and questioning why I was feeling guilty for being pregnant and slow. I felt like I was a cause of distress. He told me the price of the specific futon I was wanting ($35) and I was still willing to buy it just to get out of there as quickly as possible because of how I was feeling by that point. Again he has me follow him back up to the front, and powerwalks himself up there. By the time I reached him, he seemed even more irritated by me. I had questions to ask him about delivery. He allowed me to ask only one question and spoke to me in a harsh tone then walked away. I stood there very confused for a couple minutes as he was gone and then I decided to leave because the way he was treating me had my eyes tearing up. By the time I got back in my car, I was crying. I never bought the futon and will never be back. When I got home, I told my husband about the experience and asked if he could just go do it, but my husband was angry that I was in tears and decided to buy off someone on facebook that day instead and told me it is best if I don't go back to Surplus & Salvage.
Most interesting and unique place in the area, tons of items of all sorts for the adventurous and budget minded types piled around an old horror film studio warehouse. I've been here a few times and always see a few things I'd like to have and a few things I got to have. It's great the prices aren't really set - makes for an adventure! More of an experience in volume and wondering who would ever use that thing, I'd recommend Salvation Army and Trinity Mission for a less overwhelming selection.
